Review: Immortal Trust by Claire Ashgrove

Immortal Trust
Author:  Claire Ashgrove
Series:  The Curse of the Templars 3
Publisher:  Tor Books, March 26, 2013
Format:  Mass Market Paperback and eBook, 448 pages
List Price:  $7.99 (print)
ISBN:  9780765367600 (print)

When archaeologist Chloe Broussard accepts the contract to lead a dig in Ornes, France, she has no idea she will uncover the Veil of Veronica. When she does, she discovers a danger far greater than the demonic presence stalking her at night. Azazel wants her, as well as the Veronica, and his chosen minion is her brother. Her hope lies with immortal Templar Knight Lucan. Her life depends on oaths she knows nothing about.

For countless centuries, Lucan of Seacourt has lived with the knowledge that his brother killed their family. Now, as Azazel’s darkness eats away at his soul, old betrayal stirs suspicion. He trusts no one. Not even the seraph who can heal his dying spirit.

With the fate of the Almighty hanging in the balance, Lucan must find faith in something more terrifying than the dark lord’s creations. He must learn to believe his heart.

Melanie's Thoughts:

Immortal Trust is the third in the Curse of the Templars series by Claire Ashgrove and this instalment focuses on the Templar, Lucan of Seacourt. Lucan is on his way to meet his seraph, the fiesty archeologist Chloe who is about to to uncover the find of her career - the Veil of Veronica  - a highly prized religious artifact. Despite the fact that the series is based on the Templars the story is largely told through Chloe's POV.  Chloe believes that Lucan (and the other Templars) are representatives of the church who are sent to secure the artifact when her dig is complete. Little does she know that Lucan is actually a centuries old Templar and that she is destined to be his 'one true love' and save his soul. Lucan is drawn to Chloe but knows how important the Veil is, to the not just to the Templars but also to the evil Azazel who also determined to get the Veil using whatever nefarious means necessary. With the fate of mankind in the balance Lucan is torn between doing what is right and what is right for him. Chloe however, is torn between her growing affection for the hunky Templar and uncovering the discovery of her career. All this happens within the backdrop of rural France in the winter with a healthy dose of demonic possession just to make things interesting.

I liked Immortal Trust but that could have been down more to the model on the front cover rather than to the actual contents of the book. I thought that the story focused more on Chloe rather than Lucan in contrast to the book description. The story was a very easy read and the characters likeable (except of course, for Azazel) but I think they could have all been fleshed out a bit more. There was very little of Azazel until near the end which I think Ashgrove could have expanded on.  The dynamic between Chloe and her brother was written in quite a realistic way, as was the interaction between Chloe and Lucan. While attracted to Lucan she didn't act like many heroines in this type of novel by falling immediately into his arms (and bed).  Without giving too much away I didn't agree with the choice Chloe made at the end of the book in relation to her brother as it was inconsistent with how both characters were written.

The Templars make for great characters as they can quite easily be either the heroes or the enemy and Lucan is a great example of the heroic version. If you like a novel with a bit of a mix of historical fantasy and paranormal romance then this is a good choice, especially if you want it in an easy to read format. Do I like the series well enough to continue? Perhaps not although it really depends on what the model on the next cover looks like (shameless, I know!)

New York Comic Con 2013 Day 1 plus The Qwillery's 5th Anniversary Giveaway

New York Comic Con 2013 was held at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City on October 10 - 13, 2013.  It's an amazing con replete with delights for pop culture and genre lovers of all kinds. It's incredibly fun, slightly overwhelming and a Con I absolutely love. Now that the dust has settled it's time for me to tell you about NYCC Day 1.

Trinitytwo and I spent Friday at NYCC. We had a great day. We recorded our first video interview ever and spoke with many authors, as well as wandered around taking it all in. If you ever have a chance to attend NYCC you should go! Tickets sell out quickly so do not delay when they go on sale. Here's a link to the NYCC site, bookmark it! You can still watch the recorded live stream of the panels so it's definitely worth spending some time at the site.

What I love most about New York Comic Con is the variety of programming: TV and movies; comics (of course); novels and things bookish; and video games. On top of that if you are looking for a Sonic Screwdriver, an Ocarina, replica props, etc. it's all there. One building full of genre goodness, 3 1/2 days, and a lot of people who have a shared enthusiasm for pop culture and genre.

I spent much of the first day seeing authors I'd met before and meeting some new ones. We also collected some goodies to giveaway both in celebration of NYCC and The Qwillery's 5th Anniversary in  October. Sharing a month with NYCC is fantastic. Of course NYCC is A LOT bigger than The Qwillery.

On Saturday, my teens and I went to NYCC together. More on that in an upcoming post.

So here are the authors that we saw on Day 1:

Immediately upon arriving we were thrilled to see Scott Lynch, the author of the Gentleman Bastard series: The Lies of Locke Lamora, Red Seas Under Red Skies, and The Republic of Thieves.

M.L. Brennan, Myke Cole and Benedict Jacka shared a signing of their first novels.  Benedict Jacka writes the Alex Verus series: Fated, Cursed, Taken, and Chosen. Myke Cole writes the Shadow Ops series: Control Point, Fortress Frontier and Breach Zone (2014). M.L. Brennan writes the American Vampire series: Generation V and Iron Night (2014).

I spotted Christopher L. Bennett and Max Gladstone and stopped to say hello. Max Gladstone writes the Craft Sequence novels: Three Parts Dead, Two Serpents Rise and Full Fathom Five (2014).  Christopher L. Bennett, has written 3 Star Trek novels: Star Trek: S.C.E. 29: Aftermath, Rise of the Federation: A Choice of Futures, and Rise of the Federation: Tower of Babel (2014) as well as Only Superhuman.

(Are you wondering about the bat yet?)

I ran into (not literally) Michael R. Underwood at one of the publisher's booths. Michael is the author of Geekomancy and Celebromancy and has a new novel, Shield and Crocus, coming out from 47North in 2014.

Peter V. Brett was signing some Red Sonja comics as well as The Warded Man. He is the author of the Demon Cycle novels: The Warded Man, The Desert Spear and The Daylight War as well as some Red Sonja comics.

Jason M. Hough was signing at NYCC. Jason wrote The Dire Earth Cycle: The Darwin Elevator, The Exodus Towers and The Plague Forge. Jason recently announced that he'll be penning 3 more novels for Del Rey.

Victoria Schwab was signing her young adult novels and later on Friday signed as V.E. Schwab for her first adult novel Vicious.

We had a lovely chat with Michael J. Sullivan right after his signing and Sam Sykes was there also! Michael writes the Riyria Revelations series which were collected in 3 omnibus editions:
Theft of Swords, Rise of Empire and Heir of Novron. He's also the author of Riyria Chronicles:
The Crown Tower and The Rose and the Thorn. The Hollow World will be published in 2014.

Sam Sykes is the author of the Aeon's Gate series: Tome of the Undergates, Black Halo and The Skybound Sea. His next novel, The City Stained Red will be published in 2014 (at least that is what the novel is titled in the UK.)

We also stopped by the signing of upcoming debut author Brian Staveley. Brian's debut novel, The Emperor's Blades (Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne 1), will be published by Tor Books in January 2014.

(Still wondering about the bat, aren't you?)

Diana Gabaldon and the the Producer of Outlander on Starz, Ron Moore, also had a signing. Diana is the author of the Outlander and Lord John series. Outlander is being made into a series on Starz for broadcast in 2014. The Outlander series presently consists of 7 novels: Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, The Drums of Autumn, The Fiery Cross, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, and An Echo in the Bone. The 8th novel in the series, Written in My Own Heart's Blood, will be published in 2014.

(No photo, but both Diana and Ron signed the bat!)

We also took time to video interview Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross from Rooster Teeth Productions. You may watch the video here.

All in all the first day at NYCC was exhilarating, exhausting, and exceptional. If you can go to NYCC you really, really should.

Solaris Acquires Novels by Arianne "Tex" Thompson and Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Solaris Books recently announced the acquisition of two novels - One Night in Sixes by Arianne "Tex" Thompson for publication in 2014 and Signal to Noise by Silvia Moreno-Garcia for publication in 2015.

PRESS RELEASE

Solaris acquires “progressive and inclusive
debut novel One Night in Sixes for 2014

Solaris is pleased to announce that it has acquired the debut novel of Texan author Arianne "Tex" Thompson.

One Night in Sixes is a startlingly original Western-influenced rural fantasy novel that will be published in August 2014 with a stunning cover by Polish artist Tomasz Jedruszek.

This first novel from teacher Thompson is part of Solaris’s ongoing mission to publish the best science-fiction, fantasy, horror, and anthology titles from a diverse and progressive roster of authors from around the world.

The border town called Sixes is quiet in the heat of the day. Still, Appaloosa Elim has heard the stories about what wakes at sunset: gunslingers and shapeshifters and ancient earthly gods whose human faces never outlast the daylight.

If he ever wants to go home again, he’d better find his missing partner before they do. But if he’s caught out after dark, Elim risks succumbing to the old and sinister truth that lives in his own flesh - and discovering just how far he’ll go to survive the night.

Solaris editor-in-chief Jonathan Oliver said: “Sometimes you come across a novel that makes you want to jump to your feet and immediately announce it to the world. One Night in Sixes was just such a book. Arianne has achieved the near impossible by presenting the world with a staggeringly original work of fantasy full of rich characterisation and excitement. This is one of the most progressive and incisive works of fantasy for decades and I’m delighted to be publishing it.”

About the Author

Arianne "Tex" Thompson is a native and lifelong resident of Texas. After earning a bachelor's degree in history from UT Dallas and a master's degree in literature from the University of Dallas, she went on to become a community college professor, teaching the fundamentals of English to adults writing below the eighth-grade level. Now a master teacher for academic tutoring and test prep services, as well as the managing editor for the DFW Writers Conference, Tex is a regular feature at high schools, writing conferences, and genre conventions alike. With her first book, a 'rural fantasy' novel called One Night in Sixes, Tex joins the growing ranks of Solaris authors committed to exciting, innovative and inclusive science fiction and fantasy.

Love, music and sorcery in Mexico City – Solaris
acquires new novel by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

“Moreno-Garcia always reaches beyond the obvious...
[she] can evoke a shudder with a mere description of sound.”
– Winnipeg Review

Solaris is pleased to announce that it has acquired a new novel by Mexican and Canadian author Silvia Moreno-Garcia.

Signal to Noise is a literary fantasy novel set against the background of Mexico City, ones of the world’s biggest cities and a unique setting for a story about the very real magic of music.

This latest acquisition by the award-winning publisher of science-fiction, fantasy, horror, and anthologies will be published in February 2015.

Solaris editor-in-chief Jonathan Oliver said: "I read Signal to Noise on a beautiful summer day, sitting in my back garden. Silvia's book utterly transported me and by the end I was left in pieces. This is a beautiful, powerful novel, quite unlike anything else I have read. I'm truly proud to be bringing this to Solaris."

Mexico City, 1988: Long before iTunes or MP3s, you said “I love you” with a mixtape. Meche, awkward and fifteen, has two equally unhip friends -- Sebastian and Daniela -- and a whole lot of vinyl records to keep her company. When she discovers how to cast spells using music, the future looks brighter for the trio. With help from this newfound magic, the three friends will piece together their broken families, change their status as non-entities, and maybe even find love...

Mexico City, 2009: Two decades after abandoning the metropolis, Meche returns for her estranged father’s funeral. It’s hard enough to cope with her family, but then she runs into Sebastian, and it revives memories from her childhood she thought she buried a long time ago. What really happened back then? What precipitated the bitter falling out with her father? And, is there any magic left?

Silvia said of the genesis of Signal to Noise: “Both my parents were radio announcers. So was my grandfather. I even had a brief stint in radio as a child and my mother used to take me to the radio station since I was a baby. Signal to Noise was an attempt to understand our fascination with music and sound.”

About the Author

Mexican by birth, Canadian by inclination, Silvia Moreno-Garcia lives in beautiful British Columbia with her family and two cats. Her speculative fiction has been collected in This Strange Way of Dying and has appeared in a number of anthologies, including Imaginarium: The Best Canadian Speculative Writing. She is the winner of the Carter V. Cooper/Exile Short Fiction Competition and a finalist for the Manchester Fiction Prize. She tweets @silviamg and blogs at silviamoreno-garcia.com

From the moment Lacey glimpses the dusty-rose colonial cottage with its angled dormer windows and quaint wooden shutters, she knows she's found her dream house. Walking through its cozy rooms, the expectant mother can see her future children sitting on the round bottom step of the house's beautifully carved staircase, and she imagines them playing beneath the giant maple tree in the warm South Carolina sun. It doesn't matter to Lacey and her husband, Eric, that people had died there years before.

And there is Drew, a demanding and jealous little boy who mysteriously appears when Lacey is alone. Protective of this enigmatic child who reminds her of the troubled students she used to teach, Lacey bakes cookies and plays games to amuse him. Yet, as she quickly discovers, Drew is unpredictable—and dangerous.

Fearing for her baby's safety, Lacey sets out to uncover the truth about Drew and her dream house—a search for answers that takes her into the past, into the lives of a long-dead family whose tragic secrets could destroy her. Interview with author Mark Henry - Parts & Wreck - November 26, 2013

Please welcome Mark Henry to The Qwillery. Mark's most recent novel is Parts & Wreck, which was published on November 25, 2013.

TQ:  Welcome back to The Qwillery. We've remodeled a bit since you were here last.

Mark:  Thanks! Nice to be back!

TQ:  So... you've written a Paranormal Romance novel. This seems a bit of a departure from your prior adult novels (See Amanda Feral). What appeals to you about PNR? Do you follow the rule about an HEA or HEA for now? How is your PNR different?

Mark:  You know, Amanda had her romantic moments…sort of, but those books really were comedy of manners, or of the ill-mannered. Parts & Wreck definitely follows a similar tone in that it is a comedy, but the romance is at it’s core. I love the weird twists and turns a couple goes through to connect. As for rules, I follow them, for the most part, there’s definitely an HEA-ish in Parts & Wreck. That wasn’t so much of a struggle, because I do like to wrap things up in each book whether it’s a romance or not. I’m already seeing reviews that have declared that Parts & Wreck isn’t like anything else in PNR, and I hope that’s the case. I think there’s room for some weird romance. it’s madcap and crazy and sexy. And I love it.

TQ:  Give us the elevator pitch for Parts & Wreck (Parts Department 1)?

Mark:  A brutish amateur surgeon takes on a potentially volatile assistant for demonic organ transplant removal, hilarious misadventures…and love.

TQ:  The title leads me to believe that someone or something is a wreck. Any hints? Too spoilery? Tell us something about the novel that is not in the book description.

Mark:  The “wreck” in the title refers to the human condition. What I love about my characters is that no matter how crazy they are, they are smart and can deliver some really intelligent insights about what connects us all as people. They’re not sappy, they’re real and I can’t think of anything sexier.

TQ:  Since there is a series title - Parts Department - can we expect additional novels in the series?

Mark:  Yes. I’m working on the proposal for the second book, Cold Hands, Warm Parts, which will tell Polly’s story. I love taking seemingly unredeemable characters and turning them around and Polly’s smarmy gossip reporter is begging for a makeover!

TQ:  What else are you working on and what's next?

Mark:  By popular demand, I’m returning to the horribly insensitive world of my zombie socialite, Amanda Feral for a trilogy of novellas. The first, Beach Blanket Bloodbath is coming next month. I’ll be indie publishing those. And I’m working on two separate young adult projects. I hope to have news on the new Parts Department novel soon!

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery!

About Mark

Mark Hnery traded a career as a counselor to scar minds with his fiction. In stories clogged with sentient zombies, impotent sex demons, transsexual werewolves and ghostly goth girls, he irreverently processes traumatic issues brought on by premature exposure to horror movies, an unwholesome fetish for polyester and/or witnessing adult cocktail parties in the swingin' 70s. A developmental history further muddied by surviving earthquakes, typhoons, and two volcanic eruptions. He somehow continues to live and breathe in the oft maligned, yet not nearly as soggy as you’d think, Pacific Northwest, with his wife and four furry monsters that think they’re children and have a complete disregard for carpet.

The Awakening: Britton
The Awakening 3

"I would lick that man up one side and down the other."

Half-shifter and lead SPAC agent, Val Calhoun, has listened to women gush over the Don Juan of the precinct for the last four years. Yeah, Detective Britton Townsend is hot and has stunning blue eyes, but that foul mouth he saves only for her? What a waste of good looks. And no way does Val want that mouth anywhere near hers.

When the shifter community is threatened, Val is assigned to the case…and fails. So the High Council turns to the rogue shifter they'd sentenced to twenty years as a human--that same obnoxiously sexy Detective Townsend. And sends the two arch-enemies deep into the North Carolina Mountains-—together, and alone.

Being stuck in a tiny honeymoon cabin with Miss Castration and only one bed is definitely not Britton's idea of a good time. But the High Council doesn’t take no for an answer. After his shifter abilities are restored, Brit is once again susceptible to the dreaded, irreversible bonding instinct, the Drall. Thankfully, all he’s ever felt for Val is intense loathing, no reason to worry. Right? All he has to do is solve this case pronto, and he can go back to his footloose Casanova ways. That is, if they don’t kill each other first. Or worse...fall in love.

In case you missed the first book in the Awakening series by Abby Niles and to celebrate the publication of the third book in the Awakening series, The Awakening: Aidan (Book 1) is on sale for $0.99.

The Awakening: Aidan
The Awakening 1

Is the gift of eternal love a blessing or a curse?

After years of counseling grieving shifters, psychiatrist and half-shifter, Dr. Jaylin Avgar has become jaded on shifter mating. She wants to marry a human and forget about the love for eternity crap. Then she meets Aidan O’Connell, an infuriatingly laid back shifter who represents everything she doesn’t want. Yet, the more he pursues her, the more she craves a future with him. Only one thing stands in her way: death. Can she overcome her fear of losing Aidan to the one guarantee in life?

Millionaire consultant, Aidan O’Connell knows he’ll one day meet a woman who’ll awaken an unrelenting mating instinct. Unfortunately, that woman is Jaylin, who has no qualms about telling him that he and his so-called eternity can shove it. When she pushes him away, he takes a drastic step so she can no longer escape. The close proximity throws the instinct into overdrive. Can he control the need engrained in him until he’s certain she will reciprocate the bond, or will a moment of weakness doom him to hell on earth?

Melanie's Week in Review - November 24, 2013

This week I am going to do something a little different. I am going to tell you a story...

Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess slightly chubby 40-something reviewer ...who I will name Melanie. Melanie was waiting one cold and frosty morning for bus to go to the gym. She happened to glance at her mobile phone and saw an email from Amazon informing her of a recent order. To her delight the princess reviewer Melanie, read on to discover that book 2 of the Penryn and the End of Days series by Susan Ee, World After had been released. Despite it being 6am and a mere 4C Melanie jumped up and down with delight quickly downloading the book. Even though Melanie had received books from her fairy god mother Qwill  months before that she still hadn't read or reviewed such as City of Bones by Bailey Cunningham and she still hadn't finished King of Thorns by Mark Lawrence she just couldn't resist reading the book she had been looking forward to reading It wasn't long before her chariot bus arrived and she was tucked into reading the book.

Over the next few days Melanie furiously read the book and while she had been eagerly anticipating the new release she was left at the end, a tad disappointed. The lead protagonist Penryn was still forthright and courageous but there was however, very little interaction with the angel Rafe or at least not until the very end. She felt it was aimed more obviously to a younger reader than than book 1. It was still pretty grisly in parts and a nice cliff hanger at the end that entices the reader for book 3.

With World After finished Melanie had much to do to return her book reading kingdom to its former, more organized glory. Who knows what literary delight will be waiting for the princess reviewer the next time she waits for her chariot bus to pick her up and drive her into the golden sunrise.

.....The End

Well I hope you enjoyed that little tale. Before you think I am completely off my rocker I will share with you what else I read this week. I finished both Pantomine (Pantomime 1) by Laura Lam and at long last King of Thorns (The Broken Empire 2) by Mark Lawrence. While initially I was gripped by Pantomine I thought it really dragged at the end and I totally guessed at the ending. I knew that it was Young Adult Fantasy, but I was just hoping it wouldn't have been so obviously aimed at the younger reader. I have a bad habit of knowing a book/series is aimed at a younger reader and then still hoping the main characters don't act their age.  It's a bit unfair of me to expect this especially as Lam has created a really interesting world. Overall, I liked it want to continue with the series.

I will admit that King of Thorns was hard going. I love Lawrence's writing style and world building however, this book with its jostling back and forth from past to present was a bit overwhelming. I think I should have pushed myself to read it in one go as with big delays between chapters made it all the more difficult to re-engage with. Jorg and the other main characters are very unlikeable so that combined with a complex plot, fantasy world and mix of past and present make the second installment of this series a bit harder to read.

I just barely...and I mean just barely started City of Bones by Bailey Cunningham so I feel that I am on my way to getting back on my reading track. That's it for me this week. I hope you enjoyed my attempt at creative writing and that you have a great week ahead. Until next week Happy Reading.

Interview with Gillian Philip, author of the Rebel Angels series - Giveaway - November 22, 2013

Please welcome Gillian Philip back to The Qwillery. Gillian is the author of the Rebel Angels series. Bloodstone (Rebel Angels 2) was published in the US on November 19, 2013.

TQ:  Welcome back to The Qwillery!

Gillian:  Thank you, Sally! I’m thrilled to be here again!

TQ:  Your second Rebel Angels novel, Bloodstone, is being published in the US on November 19th, with Wolfsbane (Rebel Angels 3) coming out in the US in Spring 2014. These two novels have already been published in the UK. Has the reaction to the series been different in the US than in the UK?

Gillian:  I don’t think it’s been much different. It’s probably about the same proportion of people who love the series passionately to people who loathe it (the balance tipping towards the former, luckily!). Some of Seth’s funny little turns of phrase seem to tickle US readers, where UK readers might be more familiar with them (I remember one reviewer particularly liking “piece of piss”, which is one of my favourite sayings too).

TQ:  Tell us something about Bloodstone that is not in the (US) book description.

Gillian:  Okay, let’s see... We’re going to see quite a bit more of the Lammyr, and what they get up to on our side of the Veil if they can get away with it. I love the Lammyr. I know how very wrong that is. We’re also going to meet some full-mortals who, like Catriona in Firebrand, are going to have a huge impact on Seth’s attitudes and his whole life. And Seth is going to be faced with a crucial choice between two evils... and he ain’t necessarily going to choose right.

TQ:  In the Rebel Angels series, who is the character that surprised you the most? Who was most difficult to write? And do you have a favorite good guy, bad guy or morally ambiguous character?

Gillian:  The character who surprised me the most was undoubtedly Seth. That’s because he started out, in my mind, as a fairly minor villain, playing a distant second fiddle to Conal and his niece Finn. Seth just wasn’t having that. He completely took over my head and the story, and became the main character in all four books, turning from villain to antihero and eventually, I hope, to hero (though he loses his monopoly on the narrative voice from Book 2 onwards, so that the others can get a word in edgeways).

None of the characters in the books were too hard to write. I like them all in different ways and I felt I knew them all well enough to get inside their heads. But I found Catriona in Firebrand quite difficult after she lost her turn at narration. She and Seth were originally going to share the narrative voice, but I decided that wasn’t going to work. So she had to be seen exclusively through Seth’s eyes, and Seth is not always the best or most sensitive judge of character.

As for my favourite good guy – I have a very soft spot for Sionnach, Seth’s best friend. He’s so taciturn, and comes across as a wee hard man, but deep inside he has this incredible kindness, and he loves very fiercely. My favourite bad guy is Alasdair Kilrevin. We only meet him briefly in Firebrand, and then he doesn’t reappear till Wolfsbane, but I think he makes up for lost time. He’s vicious, he’s vain and he’s occasionally charming.

Favourite morally ambiguous character? Apart from Seth himself, that would have to be Finn. Honestly, if you don’t give a telepathic teenager some firm limits, there’s no telling what they’ll get up to.

TQ:  What sorts of research have you done for Rebel Angels series and what is the oddest thing you've found?

Gillian:  I’ve had the best fun doing research for this series. I went back to the old Scottish myths and legends I knew as a child, and read up on some more obscure superstitions. I looked up original historical accounts of the Scottish witch hunts, and guidebooks to torturing witches, like King James’s Daemonologie. (Okay, that part wasn’t so much fun as disturbing.) I went location scouting in some beautiful places, especially the island of Colonsay – where I found the ruins of Seth’s father’s dun. I read Malleus Maleficarum and Sun Tzu’s Art of War and Kirk’s The Secret Commonwealth... I talked to friends who are soldiers and journalists and election observers, so that I could send Seth convincingly off to foreign wars. I read science journals to find theories about genes and ageing, and how the human race might eventually beat mortality. So I discovered a lot of weird and head-boggling stuff.

But the oddest thing, probably, was when I came across one of the origins of the kelpie myths (kelpies are the horse-demons that my characters use as warhorses). It turns out that there’s a kind of water weed that swells up when it’s wet, and floats ashore looking just like a human liver. So people thought there was a monster in the water that ate people, but left the liver behind.

Or possibly there was just a horse monster in the water that ate people and left their livers.

TQ:  Will you be visiting the Rebel Angels world again?

Gillian:  Oh yes! The fourth and final book, ICEFALL, has just gone off to the printers! It’s going to see Seth and his clann forced to face Kate in battle, in a last desperate attempt to save their lives and their world. It takes place half in our own world, half in the Sithe world, and we find out much more about queen Kate’s motives for destroying the Veil between them.

It was a bittersweet experience, finishing the last book and sending it off. I’m going to miss them all, even the bad guys. *snif*

TQ:  You've written many novels in several different series (e.g., Rebel Angels, Survivors, Shades 2.0). What is the most challenging thing about writing novels for a series?

Gillian:  The retrospective tweaking! Sometimes you just can’t help making gaffes and clunkers, and there’s nothing you can do to fix them if the earlier books are already out there, so you just have to finesse things. I was lucky with the Rebel Angels series, in that I had rough drafts of all four written before Firebrand was published – but I still had some belated, stomach-jolting realisations. I remember waking up one night at 3am, leaping out of bed and thinking: I have to put an extra chapter in Firebrand or something crucial in Wolfsbane won’t make sense! I very nearly phoned the editor right there and then... but luckily, the next morning was soon enough to catch it before it went to print.

TQ:  What's next?

Gillian:  I’m currently writing a contemporary crime novel, which is fun, but once that’s finished in first draft I really, really want to write another Scottish-based urban fantasy. I have some ideas, and it’ll be very different to Rebel Angels, but the rewriting I did in the last few months on Icefall made me realise how much I’d missed writing fantasy. So that’s definitely my next project.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Gillian:  Thank you for having me, Sally! I’ve enjoyed it!

The Gods are dead. The Magelord Salazar and his magically enhanced troops, the Augmentors, crush any dissent they find in the minds of the populace. On the other side of the Broken Sea, the White Lady plots the liberation of Dorminia, with her spymistresses, the Pale Women. Demons and abominations plague the Highlands.

The world is desperately in need of heroes. But what they get instead are a ragtag band of old warriors, a crippled Halfmage, two orphans and an oddly capable manservant: the Grim Company.

The Grim Company is a dark and brutal epic fantasy set in a landscape where over 500 years ago the gods were destroyed by an alliance of Magelords. The Magelords are no longer united, because one source of their powers is the corpses of the dead gods and the “raw magic” they collect is running low. The story opens with Salazar, the Magelord and Ruler of Dorminia exacting revenge on a neighboring kingdom by magically dumping enough water to fill a small ocean upon its city, resulting in its utter obliteration. Salazar rules his own country by oppression and fear. His magically enhanced army mercilessly seeks out dissenters who can expect torture, enslavement, or death. Enter Davarus Cole, a hero in his own mind, and wielder of the enchanted blade, Magebane. Cole’s impetuous actions land him in trouble with Salazar’s heavy handed Red Guard. It takes world-weary warrior, Brodar Kayne, to save him from himself and the Guards. With the help of Jerek, Kayne’s sidekick, Sasha a compatriot of Cole, and Isaac the mysterious manservant of the Halfmage, Emerul, the roster of The Grim Company is complete, and so begins the exciting events in their quest to destroy Salazar.

Trinitytwo’s Point of View:

The first book in a trilogy, The Grim Company is decidedly grim. Luke Scull has created a world that seems without hope. Magelords killed the gods and now rule their world with iron fists. How does one stand up to all powerful, practically immortal, beings that are able to destroy gods? It’s really a rhetorical question, as one doesn’t or at least not very well. I really wasn’t surprised to learn that Mr. Scull is a video-game designer. His description of disembowelments, death, and mass destruction are flawlessly grisly and remind me of the mayhem I have witnessed unfold in various violent video-games. The language is foul, the tortures are highly descriptive, and maiming, killings and carnage abound. I have to admit that I cringed from time to time. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but this adventure is definitely not for the weak of stomach. (Also, just a heads up, there are excessive references made to hemorrhoids.) I felt that the first half of the book was too depressing to keep me fully engaged. The Grim Company’s quest seems to be an exercise in futility and for the most part the members of the company are off on their own, which belies the title. I was slightly disappointed with the massive amounts of setups that lead to ultimately unanswered questions. Undoubtedly, they will be answered in Book 2 or 3, but a little more closure in Book 1 would have been nice. I also didn’t connect to most of the members of the Grim Company. There really wasn’t a definitive bad guy or good guy, just many different perspectives. Davarus Cole was written to be obnoxious and although I liked the fact that he wasn’t a traditional hero, it was hard to root for him. Brodar Kayne, the grizzled veteran with a tragic past and a volatile best friend was easier to like. Sasha, the sole female in the Grim Company, was a disappointment, as her character did not seem very fleshed out. By the second half of the book, however, I realized I had grown to care for more of the characters. It became increasingly harder to put the book down and I was sorry when I reached the last page. I am very curious to find out where the tangled web that Luke Scull has woven is going and who will remain to see it through. This isn’t a book that I would recommend to the meek. If you like your fantasy dark, with a pinch of twisted humor, you will ultimately find The Grim Company compelling, satisfying, and something to savor.
